Leg-o'mutton (vegan-style) and Charles Rennie Mackintosh
Leg-o-mutton is not a very vegan-sounding pattern. The offending name refers to the puffy Victorian sleeves I came across as part of an exercise at college and it inspired me to make a modern version as part of a dress I designed.
In keeping with the Victorian theme, we did a photo shoot in the historic Scotland Street School Museum, an old Glasgow school designed by the famous Scottish architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
I did find it a bit spooky there. I had never heard of a dunce's cap before and I couldn't help thinking of all those poor kids who must have gone through such humiliation while wearing it. It all looked like scenery for a horror movie to me. Empty classrooms, empty cloakrooms... Not a good place to be for a person with the school anxiety and imagination as vivid as print on my dress.
Now I know where the Pet Shop Boys got the idea from for the costumes in their "Can You Forgive Her?" video.
The colourful scuba digital printed fabric comes from Abakhan , the shoes I bought from Ruby Shoo and the soutache set of jewellery I made myself.
